I often wonder how people become afraid of the dentist
I often wonder how people become afraid of the dentist. Without a doubt, many patients have had traumatic experiences. But yesterday, I witnessed the origin of fear in a young boy. Bear in mind, I don’t typically see children in my practice. In the past, I would speak to the parent in advance and advise them to avoid saying anything negative about the dentist, but I didn’t get that chance in this case. We agreed to see this 7 year old boy, along with his dad. The dad scared the hell out of his kid right before my eyes! Dad told his son that if he didn’t take care of his teeth that the dentist would give him a “shot” so he could “drill a hole” in his tooth and do a filling! Oy! The kid was terrified and wouldn’t let his dad out of his sight! The truth is that we have treated so many patients that never even knew how we numbed their teeth because they didn’t feel a thing. I felt bad for this poor kid.
